Topic of Discussion: "Normal" Church Planting
When I began church planting, I had grand dreams of a booming church. I read books and listened to lectures from “successful” planters that pushed my vision beyond the boring normalcy of pastoring a flock. These men were starting movements, establishing networks, writing books, and turning their city upside down for Jesus. I thought I was called to do the same thing, so I overzealously set off to do it. Needless to say, a few years into planting I was disillusioned and tired. My network consisted of about 87 people (counting kids). I hadn’t published any books, spoken at conferences, and frankly, I lived in utter anonymity. I viewed all of this as failure, and thought I just needed to work harder and keep grinding.
However, recently the Lord has begun to open my eyes to see things differently. Maybe bigger isn’t always best? Maybe starting networks, writing books, and pastoring a local church are in tension with one another, and perhaps I can only do one faithfully. What should our goals be as planters and pastors? What should the pace of our work be? How can we endure in our calling? These are some of the questions I hope to tackle in our time together.
