One Savior. One Mission. One Church.
For years, Axis Church faithfully served Nashville’s Germantown neighborhood from an unlikely home—a converted warehouse that required a great deal of faith and imagination. When the church first arrived in 2009, the building was unfinished, the floors were filthy, and the walls were covered with mold and mildew. There weren’t even proper places to sit, so people gathered on rolls of insulation to worship together. They came because they believed God had called them to Germantown, and over the years, that rough warehouse became a place where relationships were formed, lives were changed, and the gospel was proclaimed.
But as the years passed, the neighborhood around Axis began to change. Germantown experienced rapid development as parking lots disappeared, new condominiums went up, and property values increased. Many of the people and needs the church had originally come to serve were gradually being pushed farther away. Axis found itself facing a difficult but important question: Are we still where God wants us to be?
That question eventually opened the door to an unexpected relationship. Through the Nashville Baptist Association, Axis was introduced to a congregation in Madison with its own long history of faithful ministry. For 88 years, this church had served its community along Gallatin Pike, including a persistent ministry to homeless and vulnerable neighbors. With limited resources but remarkable perseverance, the congregation had provided approximately 50,000 meals over the years.
The two churches came from different places and carried different histories, but as they got to know one another, they began to recognize something familiar. Both churches knew what it meant to keep showing up. Both understood the importance of serving the people God had placed right outside their doors. Both had experienced seasons that required perseverance, and neither was ready to give up on the mission God had given them.
On April 19, the two congregations gathered together for the first time at 719 Gallatin Pike South in Madison. It was an important moment in the life of both churches, but it was only the beginning. Two congregations becoming one is more than a ceremony, a change of address, or a new name on a sign. It is a process that requires patience, humility, sacrifice, and a willingness to work through the challenges that naturally come when people with different histories begin building a shared future.
The transition has not always been easy, but through the discomfort and hard work, a shared mission has begun to emerge. Axis brings years of ministry experience from Germantown, while the Madison congregation brings generations of faithful presence in a community it knows and loves. Together, they now have an opportunity to build on both stories while discovering what God has for them in this new season.
Ultimately, this is not simply a story about a building, a relocation, or even a church merger. It is a story about what can happen when God’s people remain faithful long enough to see what He is doing and remain willing to follow when He leads them somewhere new. Buildings change, neighborhoods change, and ministry methods change, but the calling to make disciples remains.
For Axis, the mission is still clear: to know, love, and obey Jesus more and help others do the same. There are simply more people to pursue that mission with now, along with a Madison neighborhood waiting for the church to continue showing up with the hope of the gospel.
One Savior. One mission. One church. And the Lord is with us.
