Helping Young Ministers Start Well

Helping Young Ministers Start Well: Guidestone Pilot Project

The Tennessee Baptist Mission Board has been chosen to participate in a new pilot project with Guidestone, designed to help young ministers (40 and under) start strong in life, ministry, and financial health. This initiative provides practical support for licensed or ordained pastors serving in roles such as youth, worship, children’s, and other ministry positions.

Why This Matters

The reality is clear: many pastors struggle with financial stress that impacts their ministry and family life. Guidestone’s pilot program offers a way forward by combining debt relief, retirement matching, financial coaching, and compensation design tools. This 3-year program can set a young pastor on a completely different trajectory—spiritually, personally, and financially.

What’s Included for Pastors

  • Debt Relief: Up to $2,500 (medical or educational).
  • Enhanced Life Insurance: $250,000 coverage.
  • Retirement Match: Up to $3,000/year for 3 years.
  • Financial Guidance: A consultant, budgeting tools, and self-guided learning resources.

Commitments

  • Pastor & Wife: Contribute $1,000–$3,000 annually to retirement, complete Guidestone education assignments, and use the budgeting tool.
  • Church: Match retirement contributions ($1,000–$3,000 annually) and receive a consultation on best practices in compensation design.
  • Guidestone: Match contributions up to $3,000 annually, add enhanced life and disability benefits, provide financial consulting, and support debt relief.

The Long-Term Impact

If a pastor and church each contribute $3,000 annually, and Guidestone matches with $3,000:

  • $9,000 per year invested (ages 30–33).
  • With no further contributions and a 6% return, that pastor would have $200,000 at age 65.
  • If the pastor continues contributing $6,000/year, the balance could exceed $800,000 at retirement.
