Dr. Ming Wang: From Communist China to Christ—A Journey of Faith, Science, and Purpose

When Dr. Ming Wang speaks about faith and science, he does so from a perspective few people can claim.

An internationally recognized laser eye surgeon, inventor, philanthropist, and immigrant, Dr. Wang’s journey began in one of the most challenging environments imaginable—Communist China during the Cultural Revolution. Today, he is known around the world for pioneering vision-restoring technologies and for helping blind children through his charitable foundation. Yet he says one of his greatest passions is helping people, especially young adults, discover that faith and science are not enemies.

That message resonated deeply as Dr. Wang recently shared his story with Living Sent Ministries at the Nashville Baptist Association. The purpose of Living Sent Ministries is to inspire and equip business and professional leaders at all levels to live out their Christian faith. It is about “Connecting Sunday to Monday.” A core principle of Living Sent Ministries is that God gave you your business or job (vocation) to build the Kingdom.

From Labor Camps to the American Dream

Growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution, Dr. Wang lived under an atheist government that discouraged religion and restricted educational opportunities. Universities across the nation were closed, and millions of young people were sent to labor camps. As a teenager, Wang believed his future had already been decided. Then everything changed.

Following the end of the Cultural Revolution, educational opportunities reopened. Through determination, hard work, and the encouragement of his parents, Wang earned admission to college and eventually immigrated to the United States with just $50 in his pocket.

“I was poor,” he recalled, “but I was happy because I was free.”

His academic journey would take him to some of the most prestigious institutions in the world. He earned a Ph.D. in laser physics, completed research at MIT, and later graduated from Harvard Medical School. Ultimately, he combined his expertise in medicine and physics to become one of the nation’s leading laser eye surgeons. But along the way, something unexpected happened.

Finding Faith Through Science

Unlike many Christian leaders, Dr. Wang did not grow up in church. In fact, he arrived in America as an atheist. As a scientist, he immersed himself in studying the complexities of the human eye. The more he learned, the more he became fascinated by its extraordinary design and precision. What began as scientific inquiry eventually became a spiritual journey.

Wang shared that studying vision led him to wrestle with questions he could not easily answer through science alone. Rather than diminishing his faith, his scientific work opened the door to deeper reflection about purpose, design, and meaning. Today, when students ask why a scientist would believe in God, Wang offers a perspective shaped by both rigorous scientific training and personal faith.

“Science helps us understand what things are,” he said. “Faith helps us understand why they are.”

For Wang, the two are not in conflict. Instead, they complement one another.

A Mission Greater Than Medicine

Dr. Wang believes God revealed His purpose not simply through scientific discovery, but through opportunities to serve others. That calling became especially clear through his work with children suffering from blindness and severe eye injuries.

Through his foundation, Wang has helped provide sight-restoring treatment to orphaned and disadvantaged children from around the world. His story inspired the feature film Sight, which tells the true story of his journey from Communist China to becoming a pioneering surgeon in America. One of the breakthroughs that emerged from his research involved the use of amniotic membrane technology to help heal damaged eyes.

The innovation has helped countless patients worldwide and transformed the treatment of severe ocular injuries. Yet Wang is quick to redirect attention away from himself. As both a scientist and a Christian, he believes discoveries are ultimately gifts from God.

“I don’t believe I created it,” he said. “I believe God allowed me to discover a small part of His creation.”

That conviction led him to freely share his innovation with physicians around the world, helping expand access to sight-saving treatments for millions of people.

Reaching the Next Generation

Throughout his presentation, Wang returned to a concern that weighs heavily on his heart: the growing number of young adults walking away from church.

Many students today are immersed in technology, artificial intelligence, engineering, and scientific advancement. As a result, some have concluded that faith is no longer necessary.

Wang believes Christians must engage those questions rather than avoid them.

“We have to speak the language of the listener,” he said.

For today’s generation, that means understanding science, engaging difficult questions, and demonstrating that faith can withstand intellectual scrutiny.

Rather than forcing students to choose between scientific discovery and belief in God, Wang encourages Christians to show how both can work together to reveal truth.

Living Out God’s Purpose

Near the conclusion of his remarks, Dr. Wang challenged listeners to consider why God created them and what purpose He has placed on their lives. For him, that purpose includes helping those in need and building bridges between faith and science. For others, the calling may look different.

Whether in business, education, ministry, healthcare, government, or the trades, Wang believes every believer has been uniquely equipped to serve God’s kingdom through their vocation. His story stands as a powerful reminder that faith is not limited to Sunday mornings. It shapes how believers live, work, serve, and influence the world around them.

From a labor camp-bound teenager in Communist China to a world-renowned surgeon in Nashville, Dr. Ming Wang’s journey demonstrates what can happen when faith, perseverance, and purpose come together. And perhaps his most important message is this: faith and science do not have to compete. When rightly understood, both can point people toward the Creator.
