A new Foster: Grace + Valley View

In a time when many churches across the country face declining attendance and fading vitality, a quiet yet courageous movement is gaining traction—church fostering. Much like the concept of foster care for children, church fostering involves a stronger, healthier congregation coming alongside a struggling one for a defined season, offering support, guidance, and resources to help restore health and gospel vitality. This isn’t a takeover—it’s a partnership rooted in humility, kingdom-minded generosity, and a shared desire to see God’s glory reclaimed in every local church.

In the following reflection, Pastor Drake Nosco of Grace Baptist Church shares how their congregation stepped into this kind of partnership with Valley View Baptist Church, offering a firsthand glimpse of both the challenges and the deep spiritual rewards that come with fostering a church back to health.

Pastor Drake writes:

The fostering relationship between Grace Baptist and Valley View has gotten off to an encouraging and hope-filled start. The partnership has already given Valley View members a glimpse of what true restoration can look like, as described in Psalm 126. The recent joint prayer service was a beautiful picture of a full, multigenerational church family worshiping together—something some long-time Valley View members hadn’t seen since the 1980s. The warmth, effort, and prayerful support from Grace deeply impacted Valley View’s congregation, providing renewed energy and vision for what God can do in this community.

The first fostering Sunday together was described as a great success, with thoughtful touches like coffee and donuts under a tent outside setting the tone for genuine hospitality and connection. Small group and worship were both uplifting and inspiring, with meaningful fellowship, heartfelt music, and a powerful sermon challenging everyone to share Jesus everywhere. There’s a sense of excitement and anticipation building for what’s ahead as both churches continue to trust God’s grace for this season of renewal and revitalization in East Nashville.

Foster = a seeking church + a stronger church or churches + a defined relationship + a defined time frame (temporary) + the desire for the struggling church to regain health and autonomy.

In a fostering relationship, a healthy, established church provides wisdom, support, and resources to assist a church for a defined period of time so that the struggling church regains vitality and full autonomy.
